Craft production at a high level

Hand lay-up is an old laminating craft, the one most commonly used in the composites industry. ASCOM custom composites has an experienced laminating division that has elevated gel coating, laminating and venting to a true art.

As soon as higher demands are made on technical properties of the laminate and/or production speed, other techniques are considered. For example, in the field of closed mould techniques such as (light) RTM, we have a great deal of knowledge and expertise. In addition, at Ascom there are model makers and finishers who can work with any kind of tool.

Computer-assisted support throughout the process

In addition to traditional crafts, CAD and CAM are gaining an increasingly prominent place in our production process. ASCOM custom composites too uses computer-controlled support throughout the entire process. Whether it involves drawing 3D computer models from 2D sketches, printing 3D prototypes, the 3D-scanning of form studies, or 5-axis simultaneous contour milling of composite products.

We master all the necessary techniques.

Engineering/Design

Owing to years of experience in a wide range of projects, our technical department is well equipped to work with our customers to achieve an optimally developed product. For this we use the most common drawing packages that allow us to support digital communication and production efficiently.

Rapid Prototyping

Because many products are invented on the drawing board and developed digitally, it is often difficult to get a feel for the final product. Rapid prototyping can help to get a better feeling of the product’s manufacturability. Using a 3D printer, we can quickly create scale models of (parts of) products to tackle possible hick-ups at an early stage.

CNC cutting and milling

ASCOM custom composites has two CNC machines to facilitate digital control (CAM) of the production process. With the help of our 3-axis cutting table, all glass templates are cut and packed, which are then distributed over the various production departments.

The 5-axis machining centre (5x2x1,2m working area) enables us to process composite products computer-controlled (contour trimming, drilling holes, etc.). This way we can guarantee continuity and accuracy, especially in larger series. The machine is also used for manufacturing models, (direct) moulds and support products in materials such as foam (EPS/PUR), Ureol®, wood and aluminium.

3D scanning/reverse engineering

With our 3D scanner we can also digitize products where no CAD file is available. In this way, for example, we can scan, scale, reshape or otherwise rework artisanal products such as art objects to achieve the desired end result.

Hand-sculpting

If the customer, geometry, production method or other preconditions require traditional modelling and/or mould construction, we can support this. We can draw from a broad network, which makes the production of handmade sculptures, shapes or ornaments possible too. Of course, we can translate this to a digital file if necessary.

Model and mould construction

Several experienced model and mould builders are part of our team. They are equipped with the right materials, machines and knowledge to make almost any design production ready. Whether it is a serial mould the size of a mobile phone or a unique direct mould for a swimming pool.

Hand lay-up

Hand lay-upping composites is the old craft of producing glass fibre reinforced laminates. Using all kinds of brushes and rollers, our craftsmen and women transform the glass mat and polyester resin into the most exotic forms. This production method provides maximum flexibility in terms of geometry, size and production run.

Vacuum injection (RTM)

When a product places high demands on technical properties or when production is required in high numbers/speed, vacuum injection or RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) often offers a solution. By means of closed moulds in which a vacuum is created, resin is drawn through the glass package. Optimized glass-resin ratios are achieved, and multiple moulds can be injected simultaneously. Our vacuum department can also integrate technical solutions such as fasteners or bulkheads into the injection.

Batch production

Flexibility is one of our strongest assets. Our company is therefore equipped to produce minimum quantities (1 item) as well as larger batches (hundreds). Thanks to a skilled team, supported by CAD and CAM, we can guarantee a high level of continuity. No distinction is made in quality, regardless of the quantity.

Processing/finishing products

After the composite products have been produced, they often need finishing. Whether it concerns the trimming of excess material, sanding/polishing, or top coating (coating of polyester back), the products can leave here as semi-finished products or as fully usable end products. Here too, the choice can be made between manual work and CNC-controlled editing.

Assembly

When a product consists of several composite parts it is possible to have us carry out the assembly. Even when parts from third party-production need to be processed in the product, such as steel brackets or PUR pads, we can take care of the assembly.

Casting/Pressing

In addition to all fiber reinforced plastics we can also manufacture products by casting and pressing all kinds of transparent, translucent, non-translucent and light-weight resins based on polyester, epoxy, acrylate, polyurethane, etcetera. If needed it’s possible to integrate fasteners or other hardware such as LEDs.
